A Kink in Evolution

Christian evolutionists believe that God created the world and evolution is the way in which he did it. I just have one question, well maybe more. At what point in time during the evolutionary process did we stand in need of salvation? I’ve been thinking about this for a couple days and I have my own theories about what Christian Evolutionists may think. I apoligize for my lack of research in this area. Usually I take from a few sources and form an opinion. However, before I share my own I would like to hear from the reader. A further question on top of the previous is: Would this mean that the species leading up to humans were without sin? At what point did sin enter the world? Does this mean the Bible is to be taken figuratively?

  1. This can only be answered from both theology and the Judeo-Christian revelation. Note, the history of Neo-Orthodoxy here.

  2. C.S. Lewis (an “Old Earth” believer in evolution, btw) attempted to describe the process thus in the The Problem of Pain

“For long centuries God perfected the animal form which was to become the vehicle of humanity and the image of Himself. He gave it hands whose thumb could be applied to each of the fingers, and jaws and teeth and throat capable of articulation, and a brain sufficiently complex to execute all the material motions whereby rational thought is incarnated. The creature may have existed for ages in this state before it became man: it may even have been clever enough to make things which a modern archaeologist would accept as proof of its humanity. But it was only an animal because all physical and psychical processes were directed to purely material and natural ends. Then, in the fullness of time, God caused to descend upon this organism, both on its psychology and physiology, a new kind of consciousness which could say ‘I’ and ‘me,’ which could look upon itself as an object, which knew God, which could make judgements of truth, beauty, and goodness, and which was so far above time that it could perceive time flowing past. This new consciousness ruled and illuminated the whole organism, flooding every part of it with light, and was not, like ours, limited to a selection of the movements going on in one part of the organism, namely the brain. Man was then all consciousness.”

  3. I would imagine in Lewis’ view there had to be an “Adam and Eve” or else there could be no Cain and Abel or any of the rest of us.

Even secular science surmises that we must have had a couple of original parents from whom the rest of us are descended based small number of variations in the DNA code.

  4. Death was a result of sin. But death is necessary to form new species from an evolutionary perspective. We know that sin only entered the world during the time of Adam and Eve. I don’t see how evolution could have progress without death. As such, I don’t see how Humankind could have been the product of evolution.

  5. I have loads of respect for C.S. Lewis and I wonder how he would answer this argument. He may in some book I’ve not read.

  6. It would be hard to see the words and expressions of St. Paul, as an Adam or Eve that were not historical. (1 Tim. 2:13-15 / 2 Cor. 11:3, etc., etc.)

  7. Excellent viewpoints. Before this consciousness that C.S. Lewis speaks of, it seems that man was a natural animal acting only on instinct. If this were the case we would basically be robots, until that time that God gave us awareness and the gift of choice. An instinctual being cannot be held accountable for his sins if you could even call them that. Why then, if sin could not be imputed, would death have entered the world at that point? Evolution needs death in order to continue. It seems that the Bible stands in contradiction to evolution. One would have to redefine death to get past this point. And I’m sure somebody already has. However, modifying the Bible to match your perspective is not a good idea. How about changing your perspective to match the Bible? But it’s just too convenient for people to say the Bible is figurative in parts and literal in others.

  8. We simply must stand in mystery as to the scientific creation of man or humanity. Knowing but as the Scripture Revelation gives us. Man or Adam made in the “image” of God. The Ancient Hebrew Cosmology predates modern science (so-called). And that Darwinianism, is itself theory. And theory that even science has problems with.

  9. Here is how I see it

On the 5th day it says God created man and all the creatures. Nothing is said of the 6th day. The 7th day he rested. The reason nothing is said about the 6th day is that this IS the 6th day. I know this for a few reasons. Since Genesis was revealed God has done many things which fill the subsequent books in the bible, therefore he is certainly not at rest on his 7th day. Also the book of Genesis quite clearly sates what happens on each day, except for of course the 6th day. The 6th day is the day of testing. Now this is where it gets tricky because people find the whole thing looks a bit sadistic, why not make us perfect instead of putting us through trials? I have thought and prayed much for the answer to this question and believe the Holy Spirit has revealed to me that God is Love and the “Devil” is Nothing which we perceive as Evil. Love feels the need to create, which is synthesized in humans by the yearning for offspring. God yearned to create so that it could share its love, however it knew that there was an opposing force in existence which was Nothing and it would greedily look upon Gods creation and seek to destroy it. So God made a pact, that as he made life he would share his creation with the Nothing in a way that was fair. The Species that died out before Man’s arrival were those who God made for the evil one to consume, this would explain the reference to the Dragon in revelations as if my theory is correct Dinosaurs where consecrated to Nothing and are therefore its metaphorical manifestation as a dragon at the end times in Revelations 20:2. This also explains the Devils torment, as the Nothing could not create so God had to create the “Devil” for him in the form of an Angel. An evil Angel could not live in heaven, but the Angel was still God’s creation and knew him because he was there at the beginning and made at the same time as Christ (I use the word time loosely as time as we know it didn’t yet exist at that point). So the Devil resents man because he knows that he can never be with God in heaven as he is Evil and seeks to be God, He knows his fate is death in the Nothingness and the only reason he exists is to serve the Nothing which fills him with pain as he is Evil and wishes to serve no one but himself. His one consolation is that he can eventually take with him some of the creatures responsible for his miserable existence, us.
The 6th day began when the Forbidden fruit was eaten and man was illuminated, which had to be done so we could be given free will and the right to choose our destiny. The story is purely symbolic. The act of taking God’s fruit was theft, and the fruit was “Consumed” in the same way that the Nothing consumes, it is the first ever act of selfishness and the proof that man now new both Good and Evil. This is even reflected in the Law in which one tenth of a persons income must be given to God through the church, this was not because God needs money, but to show him that we hold him more important then the ownership of material things, and in loving God we love all creation so it is a manifestation of out worthiness to be with him whenever we happily give.
This is why we have two creation stories, because the whole thing is so complex, rocket science pales in comparison. Now it wouldn’t be fair to do this to his children without giving them a moral compass to guide them to him, as the knowledge of Good and evil meant that Man was constantly pulled in the two opposite “directions”. So he sent his Son to teach us all how to love, and before he sent his Son he sent others such as Isaiah so that his children would know exactly who his Son was when he did arrive. After his death and ascension the Holy Spirit was sent during Pentecost down to the world as the new light that guided us towards him as Jesus could no longer be there in person, and those who were closest to Jesus, his Apostles, gained the full benefit of this. If you have love in your heart then you know of God, if you have the Holy Spirit of Jesus in your heart you feel compelled so strongly to be like him I will be painful to do wrong, some people call this guilt, I call it the survival instinct of the soul. Did you ever wonder why such a seemingly obvious Law for Good like “thought shall not kill” would have to be written in stone by a God to be adhered to? It’s just possible that Mans conscience was severely lacking before the Law of Moses and Holy Spirit was given (after all Ancient Egyptian Royal Families gave no second thought to incest and virgin sacrifices were widespread practice). So now we have a choice, to do Good or to Do Evil, and just as God was allowed his Advocates in Moses, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, so the Nothing will be given its in the Devil(manifested through all pagan Gods) the Antichrist (in the beast of revelations) and the Evil Spirit. Now I’m not saying here that Pagan civilizations are Evil or that Moses’ People were Good, for I am not the Judge, but just that the powers and principals behind them were so. Also it says in the Gospels that no man can be made right with God through the Law and so I also believe that no man can be made wrong by the opposing religions, for it is also said that those who died in Sodom and Gomorrah will have a lesser punishment then those who sinned after the gift of the Holy Spirit was given.

So Now in the 6th day we are all called to choose and what we choose will determine our fate in the afterlife, and for Those left at the very End when God can save from the Nothing no more people as the Devils lies have finally taken over, then and only then do I believe that the Evil Spirit will descend on the world and take control of the people still living there in. They will be people that the Devil and his anti-Christ have deceived so thoroughly that their hope is lost and they can not be reached by the Holy Spirit. Then time, the great drum beat, will stop and the whole thing will get finally get sorted out. After about a thousand years of sorting through who were Gods Children and who was the Nothing’s that is( See Revelations 20).

and if you had any doubts as to what the 6th day is about you can go to a website that has nothing to do with spirituality, an advertising company’s http://www.day6creative.com/ interesting how the Advertisers who’s Job it is to target “Consumers” – AKA people to be consumed, are clocking on the fact that its the 6th day. If you want to understand the 6th day website then http://vigilantcitizen.com is a must.

  10. “Now we know the answer is clearly and unambiguously No: there was no Adam and Eve as portrayed in Genesis.”

You can’t really make such a claim.

    Why not?
It’s basic genetics. The same essential genetic problems that plague Noah’s Ark are the same as Adam and Eve.
    Cheetas and all that.
